Valdas (the thing that has no name in english)

Boiling potatos or soup on cooker needs special care. You have to be very alert that your stuff doesn't boil over or the cover doesn't fly away.

Many people have said that they are concerned about their cover flying to China or to some other country. It's obvious that my grandpa is also concerned about the issue because he is old and doesn't like to travel much. (He especially doesn't like eastern parts of the world).

To prevent the accident that could happen he reinvented valdas. Valdas (pronounce like Valdas in Valdas Adamkus) is a thing that is used to prevent overboiling and cover fly-away.

My grandfather took a piece of wood and a small rope and a drill. With drill he made a hole into his cooker. On the one end of the stick he put a hook and on the other he put rope. As you see the cover of the pot is still there and hasn't gone to China).

When asked, grandpa said:
"In the 20s and 30s in last century the thing - valdas was very popular among estonian households, i thought to give it a chance in todays modern world." - Grandpa
It remains unclear whether estonians were afraid of the cover flying to China or the valdas had some other practical task also.
